BOMBAY SAPPERS SHINE IN MEDAL TALLY AT XIX CWG, DELHI

   

  • Bombay Sappers has always been synonymous with Sports due to its deep-rooted association with Adventure & Sports. Many great sportsmen such as Sub Maj Gopal Devang, Sub Jagjit Singh & Sub Maj Kasam Khan who have brought many laurels to the Country have belonged to the Bombay Sappers. Keeping up with this tradition Bombay Sappers have won 03 Gold 01 Silver and 01 Bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games being held at New Delhi. Hav Gurpreet Singh in Shooting, Hav Sukhen Dey, Hav K Ravi Kumar, Rect Hav CD Mali in weight lifting have made The Bombay Sappers and the nation proud by winning medals in the Commonwealth Games.
  • Hav Gurpreet Singh comes from a very humble village background, He was enrolled in Bombay Sappers in year 2004. He got selected in shooting team during one of the many talent hunts conducted. Thereafter, due to his grit and determination he never looked back and kept winning in all the Shooting Championships. He achieved his pinnacle of Glory by winning two Gold medals and one Bronze in shooting event for India in 19th CWG, New Delhi. He also established new CWG record in rapid fire (Pair) event.
  •   Hav Sukhen Dey hails from West Bengal. His humble background did not come in his way to become a Weightlifting Champion. He was enrolled in Bombay Sappers, Kirkee in Jul 2008. This Centre recognized his talent and gave formal training to improve his performance at Army Sports Institute. Due to his determination and hard work he performed very well in numerous Weightlifting tournaments. In the current Commonwealth games at Delhi he made the country and Bombay Sappers Kirkee proud by winning a Silver Medal.
  • Hav K Ravi Kumar belongs to a remote place in Orissa. He started Weightlifting as a child. He represented Orissa in Junior National Championship where he was selected by Army Sports Institute. Hav Ravi Kumar was enrolled by Bombay Sappers kirkee in Feb 2008. He was given encouragement and formal coaching at ASI, Pune. With his sheer hard work and determination he excelled in his game. He made the Bombay Sappers Kirkee and the Country proud by winning a gold medal and creating a new record in the Commonwealth games being conducted at Delhi.

  • Recruit Havildar Chandrakant Dadu Mali hails from a humble back ground from Kolhapur. He was interested in weightlifting from childhood. He won three medals in Junior National Championship. Bombay Sappers and ASI, Pune recognized his talent and enrolled him in Oct 2010, to improve his talent for better performance. Rect Hav Mali worked very hard and achieved fourth position in the Commonwealth games held at Delhi.
  • All these athletes have also been selected to represent India at Asian Games 2010 which is scheduled next month in China. The Indian Army is also undertaking the first Indian Expedition to South Pole. The team is led by Col Anand Swaroop, a famous Indian mountaineer. Team is presently training in Greenland under his leadership. The South Pole skiing expedition will be launched early next year.
  • Brig Sanjiv Talwar, Commandant BEG & Centre, Pune has complimented all medal winners and announced the monetary incentives to motivate them. These successes can be attributed toward the recent impetus given towards improving the overall standard of sports at BEG & Centre under the directions of Maj Gen VK Bhatt,SM, VSM, the Colonel Commandant of Bombay Sappers, who himself is a International rowing coach, sailor and mountaineer.
  • All the above sportsmen were felicitated at Delhi during the annual Bombay Sappers Lunch. The serving and retired officers of the group congratulated these Common Wealth Games ‘Heroes’.
